Lynyrd Skynyrd will be happily "bombarding people" with product this year, according to guitarist Gary Rossington -- and he's hoping that will include some new music in the not too distant future, too.
"We've been offered a couple deals," Rossington, the sole surviving member of Skynyrd's original lineup, tells Billboard. "The record business is so different now, but they want us to do a new album with new material and we're gonna do it. We've been writing it a little bit here and there, and through the years we've written songs we never really used 'cause we didn't have enough time to record them. So we're gonna get do some new material here. I'm not sure when it's gonna come out; it'll probably end up being next year 'cause we're so busy with material this year, but we hope to record it in the fall."
Skynyrd's last studio album, Last of a Dyin' Breed, came out in 2012 an debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200.
Skynyrd's barrage begins with the June 2 release of Sweet Home Alabama, a two-disc set from a 1996 concert on Germany's Rockpalast TV show with bonus tracks from 1974. Still to be scheduled, meanwhile, is Lynyrd Skynyrd -- One More For the Fans!, a CD and DVD from a tribute concert last November in Atlanta featuring the band as well as Gregg Allman, Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, Charlie Daniels, Alabama, Warren Haynes and others.
"Oh, man, it was a great evening," Rossington recalls. "It was a tribute to the music, and everybody who came, all our friends and the great artists who were there were just great, all those Southern groups that we kinda grew up playing with and had toured with back in the old days, it was just a great thing. It was very humbling and I was in awe of all those guys. To hear Gregg Allman sing 'Tuesday's Gone' a little bluesy, it was just great."
And if all that's not enough, Skynyrd also recently performed both of its first two albums in their entireties in Jacksonville, Fla., which was Rossington says was filmed and recorded for future release.
The group winds down a European tour on May 5 in Finland and takes a few weeks off before beginning a summer run in North America, starting May 28 in Westbury, N.Y.
"I want to keep the name of the band good and respected and it seems to be," Rossington says. "There's a few people who might've through the years thought I was wrong to not do the originals, but we tell everybody and everybody knows it's not the original band; it's just this band playing their songs and music, and I think doing a great job of it. Some bands that don't keep doing it; They're great bands but they just kind of fade away 'cause you don't get to hear them anymore. So as long as we're doing this, I think the name stays at least a little relevant."
This release includes extremely rare footage of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd line-up and features all their classics including: 'Sweet Home Alabama', 'Free Bird', 'Working For MCA', 'Saturday Night Special', 'Gimme Three Steps', 'I Ain't The One' and many more. This is the first release of the audio from the show on CD.
The Bonus Features [DVD + CD set format only] offer a real treat for Lynyrd Skynyrd fans with three tracks from the Hamburg Musikhalle on 5 December, 1974 featuring the original line-up of the band performing three classic songs: 'Working For MCA', 'Free Bird' and 'Sweet Home Alabama'.
