From April 2013, the german copyright management "company" GEMA, which is responsible for collecting "copyright fees" from everybody who plays music in a public or "semi-public" way, will increase the fees by up to 1500 %. No Joke. This means a lot of clubs, concert venues, bars, cafes and so on will get into massive trouble, even the hardcore-commercial places. To make clear about what we are talking here, I have some very disturbing numbers for you, directly from good sources / club owners themselves. All statements are official. And I chose a widely spread selection of clubs, from little fetish venue to mainstream club, with additional numbers for a typical festival and bars. 1 € is nearly $1.30, by the way.
Cookies [excellent, high end clubbing, but not expensive. middle size]/ Berlin: Fee goes up from 6.200 € to 85.000 €. Club will get into trouble.
Watergate [middle class, middle size] / Berlin: Fee goes up from 10.000 € to 50-140.000 €. Club will close [offical statement].
Kit Kat Club [special interest, fetish, middle size] / Berlin: Fee goes up from 19.000 € to 150.000 €. Club will close [offical statement].
Berhain [you know, middle size] / Berlin: New fee will be 300.000 €. Club will close [offical statement].
SchwuZ [gay club, don't know size ;)] / Berlin: from 11.000 € to 85.000 €. Club will close [official statement].
Matrix [mainstream, big] / Berlin: from 28.000 € to 208.000 €. Club will close [official statement].
Magda/Lena (ex-Maria btw) [middle class, middle size] / Berlin: from 15.000 € to 95.000 €. Future is unsure.
Rote Sonne & Harry Klein (middle-class, middle size) / Munich: 500 - 2000 % increase.
Legendary Open-Air-Festival "Nation of Gondwana":
Fee increase by 1500 to 2000 %.
Any bar or cafe that plays music: fee increase by 2800 % (no save numbers here, but depends on opening hours (!)).
All people will lose their jobs. And Germany will lose nearly all (!) quality clubs.
---------------
Even if this is somehow related to music piracy - why the hell is GEMA killing clubs with stupid laws ? By the way only a quite low percentage of artists played in nightclubs are connected to GEMA and will see money from them. Sick!
According to the massive impact on this new "law" I really ask you to spread this and do whatever you can. The CaptainCrawl Facebook Page will keep you updated.
En gros, c'est comme si, en France, la SACEM demandait à toutes les salles de concert de payer 15 fois plus (oui 15 !) les frais de SACEM.
On se demander vraiment à quoi ils jouent
